Background Much of renewable energy production is intermittent in nature. This makes the integration of this renewable energy more difficult when the share of renewable energy in a system increases, as power production and consumption must be balanced at all times. The target for the Danish power system is 50% wind power by 2020. Based on 2011 data, 50% wind power penetration results in a wind power production between 0% and almost 300% of the actual power demand. Also considering that the total portfolio performance of traditional generation is not always as dynamic as required in a wind power dominated system, a lot of flexibility will be needed in the power system. Electricity storage significantly increases the flexibility of a system, as it provides additional demand when storing electricity and additional power generation when releasing the stored electricity. Wind power production and consumption extrapolated to 2025. Source: ing.dk
